By 1823, it became apparent that a force had to be created to protect the settlers from hostile forces. On August 10, 1823 Austin received permission from the Mexican government to employ ten men, all volunteers, to protect the Texas frontier. Thus, the Texas Rangers were born. They "ranged" over the vast expanse of Texas. 1835 saw 25 men forming one Ranger Company. The Ranger's primary concern was to protect against hostile Indians, as well as outlaws and Mexican bandits.
